Akureyri is the largest town in northern Iceland, often called the Capital of the North. It sits at the head of the long Eyjafj枚r冒ur fjord beneath snow-capped peaks, and serves as a hub for fishing, education and tourism.
The town is known for its botanical garden, its colourful houses and a mild microclimate, and despite its small size it sustains an active cultural life. Touring stand-up makes its way north to local venues from time to time. The cartoonist and comedian 脼贸rarinn Hugleikur Dagsson comes from Akureyri.
