About Steve Smith
Steve Smith trained as an engineer and taught school before comedy paid the bills, and the practical, home workshop humour of his best known character carries traces of both. That character is Red Green, a lodge president whose answer to every problem is duct tape, and he first turned up in the sketch series Smith and Smith, made from 1979 for a station in Hamilton.
The Red Green Show ran from 1991 to 2006 and set the character inside a mock lodge broadcast, with handyman segments and advice for men of a certain age. Smith has written a newspaper column in the character's voice, brought him to the cinema in Duct Tape Forever and toured North America with him as a live act. In 2023 he entered the Canadian Comedy Hall of Fame as both creator and performer.
