Andrés López
About Andrés López
Lopez started performing in 1990, while he was a student of systems engineering and anthropology at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. The university gave him a classroom to teach stand-up in, which in a country with no stand-up tradition meant working out the local version of the job and then handing it on.
He wrote and performed comedy sketches for the morning show El Mananero on the radio station La Mega, and those sketches grew into the television programme Pido La Parola on RCN. In 1998 he took the Shakespearean women, Juliet, Desdemona, Lady Macbeth and Ophelia, in the Colombian staging of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.
La Pelota de Letras, first performed at the Hard Rock Cafe in Bogota in 2004 and released on DVD the year after by Universal Music Colombia, is the show he is measured by. It reads Colombian family life from the 1960s onwards as a set of generational habits, and it sold well enough to earn him the Diamond and Double Diamond DVD awards. Me Pido La Ventana followed, and he became the first Colombian to play the South Beach Comedy Festival.
