Bernadette

Bernadette is an Egyptian stand-up comedian based in Cairo and the founder of Comedy Sett, a comedy collective described as being "led by women, run by women, and performed by women." Comedy Sett emerged in March 2022 to create space for female comedians in Egypt's stand-up scene, alongside fellow comedians Noha Kato, Reem Nabil, and Sarah AbdelRahman. Egyptian media have described Comedy Sett as the country's first all-female inclusive stand-up show. In her sets, Bernadette uses well-prepared jokes and social commentary to examine the dynamics of male-female relationships in Egypt, highlighting double standards and societal expectations placed on women. She has said that hearing comments dismissing women's presence in stand-up comedy motivated her and other female comedians to create their own platform, since women had not been given the space to prove themselves on stage. Bernadette's full legal name has not been publicly disclosed; she performs and is known publicly under this single stage name.
