About George Azmy
George Azmy is an Egyptian stand-up comedian and visual artist, born in Cairo in 1983. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Helwan University, he built a career in advertising as an art director, winning Cannes Lions, Lynx and Clio awards at global agencies. Azmy entered stand-up comedy through an open audition, and his wry social commentary on subjects such as national identification cards and taxi drivers, combined with a strong stage presence, won him a place performing alongside the Axis of Evil Comedy Tour, a group of Middle Eastern-American comedians, during their December 2007 shows in Cairo. He went on to perform in Dubai in a set broadcast internationally on Showtime, and continued performing in Cairo's early stand-up scene into 2009, sharing stages with fellow pioneers such as Noha Kato. Beyond the stage, Azmy has continued to draw on his sharp observational skills in his visual artwork.
