About Azis Gagap
Azis started out in lenong, the Betawi folk theatre, playing one neighbourhood hall after another before television noticed him. In 2002 he began working with the group Bagito on the TVRI programme Paviliun 21, which is where he crossed paths with the comedians of Patrio.
His name spread nationally from 2008 through Opera Van Java, the improvised slapstick show he performed on alongside Parto, Sule, Andre Taulany and Nunung. The stammer that gives him his stage name is the timing device of the act: the pause does the work a punchline would do for someone else, and the other performers build around it. He stayed with the programme until it ended in 2021, and he has also recorded as a singer.
