About Bene Dion Rajagukguk
Bene Dion Rajagukguk, born Bene Dionysius Rajagukguk on March 2, 1990, in Dolok Masihul, Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra, is an Indonesian stand-up comedian, film director, screenwriter and actor of Batak descent. He grew up in Tebing Tinggi, graduating from SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi in 2009, and later completed an Industrial Engineering degree at Universitas Gadjah Mada in 2014 with cum laude honors. He began performing open mic stand-up in 2011 through the Stand Up Indo Jogja community in Yogyakarta and became a contestant on Stand Up Comedy Indonesia season 3 on Kompas TV in 2013, building a signature style around blunt, everyday material delivered in a thick Batak accent that sounds angry even as it draws laughs. Bene moved into filmmaking with his 2019 directorial debut Ghost Writer, then wrote and directed the 2022 comedy Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap, drawn from his own Batak family life; he had earlier published a 2014 novel of the same title, though he has said the two works tell different stories beyond sharing a name. Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap was chosen as Indonesia's official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2023 Academy Awards, though it did not advance to the shortlist.
