About Hendra Gabeng
Hendra Gabeng, whose full name is I Wayan Hendra Purnawan, is an Indonesian comedian and Hindu religious teacher (penyuluh agama) from Desa Tua village in Marga district, Tabanan, Bali. Before moving into modern stand-up comedy, he performed for years in bondres, a traditional Balinese comic theatre form, under the stage name Gabeng with the Takir Wangsuh troupe. In November 2019 Hendra entered the first ever Stand Up Comedy Bali competition, held as part of the Festival Seni Bali Jani at Taman Budaya, Denpasar, and won first place among 29 participants from across Bali, Java, Lombok and East Nusa Tenggara, in what was his first attempt at the modern solo stand-up format. His winning material combined everyday and social observations with Hindu religious teaching, reflecting his day to day work as a religious instructor. He has continued to be cited as an example of how traditional Balinese comedy can translate into the contemporary stand-up format, and the competition's runner up, Simson Yermia Libing, later became known nationally as comedian Jerry Libing.
