About Benito Urgu
Benito Urgu, born in Oristano in 1939, started out in music. Before he was twenty he was singing with a local group, and with I Barrittas, a band whose name played on his nickname Berrita, he worked the dance halls of Sardinia. The record that made him famous was a comic single, Sexy Fonni, released in 1977.
His humour sits on the line between Sardinian and regional Italian, drawing on the expressions, sayings, grammar and pronunciation that mix the two. With Alessandro Fois he staged Boghes de Domo, a musical performed in the Sardinian language.
Television took him beyond the island. He worked alongside Nino Frassica, appeared on Colorado Cafè on Italia 1 in 2006 and joined Carlo Conti's I migliori anni in 2008. On screen he took part in Bianco di Babbudoiu, the first feature by Pino & gli anticorpi, in 2016, and in 2019 the town council of Marrubiu gave him its Marrubino d'oro award.
