About Adriana Chávez
Adriana Chávez is a Mexican stand-up comedian widely described in Mexican press as the first openly lesbian stand-up comedian in the country. Trained in visual arts, she found comedy to be the medium that best let her express herself, and in 2008 she studied with the New York-based feminist actress and comedian Ana Carolina during a stay in Mexico. She began performing stand-up in 2009 at Café 22, one of the venues associated with the birth of Mexico City's stand-up scene. Her sets discuss discrimination, love and the assumptions people make based on appearance, using humor to make audiences reflect on heteronormative stereotypes and the free expression of sexual orientation. She has recorded the special Soy Lesbiana for Comedy Central Latin America, and continues to perform at universities and cultural events, including a 2023 LGBTIQ+ program at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, describing her own presence on stage as inherently political.
