About Alberto Velarde
Alberto Velarde is a Mexican radio broadcaster and stand-up comedian from Jalisco who played a key role in establishing stand-up comedy in Guadalajara. With more than two decades in media as a radio host and communicator, he moved into stand-up nearly fifteen years ago and, in 2013, co-founded Stand Up GDL with fellow comedian Diego Ortiz, the first stand-up comedy collective in Jalisco. The group, which also included comedians Daniel Flores, Guillermo Herrera, Emma Uribe and Luis Miller, produced the city's earliest regular stand-up shows at a time when the genre had little audience or venue support in Guadalajara, and went on to train much of the local scene through courses and open mics. Velarde is among the few Guadalajara comedians to work in stand-up full time, and has spoken at industry events including Jalisco's Talent Land conference about building a stand-up career and comedy business outside Mexico City.
