Lumara González Aréchiga González
About Lumara González Aréchiga González
Lumara González Aréchiga González studied biology at CUCBA, the biological and agricultural sciences centre of the Universidad de Guadalajara, where the lecturer José Luis Navarrete got her interested in science communication. Stand-up came later: while doing her social service in Querétaro she signed up for comedy classes and saw that jokes built on science could make an audience curious about the subject.
In 2018 she launched the character Lumara, la bióloga and took it to stand-up and open mic nights, performing in Spanish. Her routines look at social problems through the lens of biology, and she checks the facts, since part of the point is to push back against misinformation. The persona then moved online, first as short Instagram clips, later as longer Facebook videos and finally as a YouTube channel, which placed her among Mexico's educational creators. Her project Biología para públicos no especializados earned the state innovation prize for science communication in 2023. Off stage she teaches at a secondary school and joins other science outreach projects.
