Pilat Andriy

Andriy Pilat splits his work between the comedy stage and the canvas. On the stand-up side he is one of the co-founders of the club Free Stand-up; as a painter he makes abstract pictures out of rubbish.

He is from Chernivtsi, where in 2012 he completed the food production course at the city's commercial technical college. Drawing had been with him since childhood, and he later joined the hip-hop community Underfloor, taking up graffiti and breakdancing. He also has experience at Zelenew, a recycling laboratory in Lviv.

Since 2017 he has painted with waste, collecting discarded material and melting it in his studio with an iron and a hair dryer, an approach he frames as a rejection of consumerism. His exhibition Homo plasticus opened in Chernivtsi in November 2018, and in December 2019 the Ukrainian and international editions of BBC News both ran pieces on his work.
