Markus Meechan, born on 19 October 1987 and known online as Count Dankula, is a Scottish YouTuber, comedian, and former candidate for the European Parliament.
He drew press coverage after posting a YouTube video showing him training his girlfriend's dog to raise its paw at the phrase "do you wanna gas the Jews" in the manner of a Nazi salute. Meechan was arrested and, after a trial in March 2018, convicted of being grossly offensive under the Communications Act 2003, a case that sparked wide debate about free speech. He was fined 800 pounds in April 2018, refused to pay it, and instead donated the same sum to the Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity. In March 2019 the 800 pounds was taken from his bank account under an arrestment order.
