About Michael Barrymore

Barrymore learned the job in front of holiday crowds, working as a Redcoat at Butlins before moving into West End theatre shows. He won an edition of New Faces in 1979, sat on the Blankety Blank panel and warmed audiences up for Larry Grayson on The Generation Game, doing impressions of John Cleese and Norman Wisdom along the way.

His own sketch programme, The Michael Barrymore Show, arrived in 1983. What made him a household name was the game show Strike It Lucky from 1986, later retitled Strike It Rich, where the comedy came less from the format than from his habit of walking away from it to talk to the contestants. The variety show Barrymore ran through the 1990s, mixing interviews, routines and turns with other performers, and it spun off My Kind of People and My Kind of Music. He headlined the Royal Variety Performance in 1993, and audiences answered his entrance line, Awight, back at him.

He acted as well, taking the title role in the comedy drama Bob Martin as a failing game show host. Long afterwards he found a second audience by posting short comic videos on TikTok.
