He has appeared in magic shows on BBC1, ITV, Channel 4, Five, and Sky1, presented the CBBC game shows Stake Out and Wait for It..!, and was one of the regular magicians on series 2 of the BBC One show The Magicians. He began his interest in magic at the age of eight when his mother bought him a magic book, and was educated at Acklam Grange Secondary School before studying at the University of Hull's Scarborough Campus, where he gained a Bachelor of Arts in theatre.

Ever and travelled the world with Ali Cook for The Secret World of Magic, which aired on Sky1 in 2005. He also hosted Dirty Tricks on Channel 4, which was nominated for a Rose d'Or.

In 2012, Firman was one of the featured magicians on The Magicians, the first magic show in 30 years to be broadcast live. He performed his debut solo show Hokum at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007 and has returned each year with a new show, most recently in 2018 with Marvels at the Pleasance Beyond. The Telegraph described him as "the new poster-boy for British comedy magic", and in July 2008 he was invited to perform at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal.
