About Ricky Gervais

Ricky Dene Gervais (born June 25, 1961, at Battle Hospital in Reading, Berkshire) is an English comedian, actor, writer, and television producer. The son of a French-Canadian laborer father and an English mother, he grew up in Whitley, Reading, was educated at Ashmead Comprehensive School, and earned a philosophy degree at University College London. He first attempted a career in music as singer of the new-wave act Seona Dancing in the 1980s before the band was dropped by its label, and he later managed the then-unknown band Suede.

Gervais turned to comedy in the mid-to-late 1990s and, with Stephen Merchant, co-created, co-wrote, and starred in the BBC sitcom "The Office" (2001-2003), playing office manager David Brent, followed by "Extras" (2005-2007), "Derek" (2012-2014), and "After Life" (2019-2020), all of which he also created and wrote. He served as executive producer and made cameo appearances in the American adaptation of "The Office." Gervais hosted the Golden Globe Awards ceremony five times, in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020, becoming known for pointed, often controversial opening monologues targeting Hollywood.
