About Roy Chubby Brown
Royston Vasey (born 3 February 1945), better known professionally as Roy Chubby Brown, is an English comedian whose act consists of offensive humour, high profanity and outspoken disdain for political correctness. Born in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, he left school without qualifications, spent time living rough and was sent to borstal and then prison, where reading a Bob Hope book inspired him to become a stand-up comic. He took to blue comedy in 1971 and has said he was the first person to say the 'C' word on stage in the UK. His image is characterised by a leather flying helmet and goggles and a multi-coloured patchwork suit, and his breakthrough came in 1990 when PolyGram Video signed him to a home video contract. He appeared in Series 2 of The League of Gentlemen as Larry Vaughn, mayor of the fictional town of Royston Vasey, named after his birth name. He was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2002 and had a vocal cord removed.
