Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, she majored in drama at the University of Hawaii at Manoa before dropping out and relocating to New York City in 1965, where she began her career in off-off-Broadway plays and joined the Broadway companies of Fiddler on the Roof and Salvation. She came to prominence in 1970 singing at the Continental Baths, a gay bathhouse where she built a core following with her piano accompanist Barry Manilow, who produced her 1972 debut album The Divine Miss M. She has released 14 studio albums, selling over 30 million records worldwide, with hits including 'The Rose' and 'Wind Beneath My Wings.'
