About Eddie Murphy
Eddie Murphy came out of the New York club circuit as a teenager and joined the cast of Saturday Night Live from 1980 to 1984, where his characters made him famous before he had carried a film. His stand-up was built on impressions, long profane storytelling and an ear for how people actually speak, and he has named Richard Pryor as the comedian who made him want the job.
Two concert films hold that act. Delirious went out as a television special in 1983 and its album took a Grammy for best comedy album in 1984; Raw followed in 1987 with a wide cinema release, filmed in New York. Screen comedy took over afterwards, in Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America, and he has kept returning to sketch and to voice work. Music is a genuine second track in his output, which is why his song releases sit alongside the comedy.
