About Jay Leno
Jay Leno was born James Douglas Muir Leno on April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York, and grew up in Andover, Massachusetts. He earned a degree from Emerson College in Boston, where he began performing stand-up comedy in local clubs. Leno relocated to Los Angeles in the 1970s to pursue comedy full time, building a reputation as one of the busiest touring stand-up comedians in the country. He first appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on March 2, 1977, and became a regular guest host in 1987 after serving as Carson's substitute host from 1986. In 1992 Leno succeeded Carson as permanent host of The Tonight Show on NBC, a position he held until September 2009, when Conan O'Brien took over. Leno returned to host the program from March 2010 until his final episode on February 6, 2014. Throughout his television career he continued to perform stand-up comedy regularly, and he is also known for his long-running web series Jay Leno's Garage.
