About Jo Koy

Jo Koy (born Joseph Glenn Herbert, June 2, 1971 in Tacoma, Washington) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He was a frequent panelist on E!'s late night show Chelsea Lately, and has had a total of six comedy specials released by Comedy Central and Netflix. In 2024, he hosted the 81st Golden Globe Awards.

Koy was born to an American father who served in the United States Air Force and a Filipina mother. His family moved to Tacoma, and after high school they relocated to Las Vegas to be near his ailing grandmother. He enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, but dropped out to pursue stand-up comedy. His stage name comes from a family nickname: his aunt once called "Jo Ko, eat!" which he misheard as "Koy" and adopted.

Koy's regular appearances included Catch a Rising Star at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, after which he rented the Huntridge Theater and went door to door to sell tickets. His role as a regular guest on Chelsea Handler's Chelsea Lately gave him prominence in the US. In 2019, he released the Netflix special Jo Koy: Comin' in Hot, filmed before about 8,000 people at the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, and his 2020 Just Kidding world tour took him to the United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines. In 2020, Netflix released Jo Koy: In His Elements, featuring Filipino American comedians, DJs, and B-boys. He also hosts the weekly podcast The Koy Pond with Jo Koy.

His monologue as host of the 81st Golden Globe Awards in 2024 was met with criticism from viewers and critics, with reviewers including those at Rolling Stone and Vulture noting that many jokes drew groans, and Koy facing criticism for putting blame on his writers during the monologue.
