He has received numerous accolades, including 24 Primetime Emmy Awards, 2 Grammy Awards, and 5 Peabody Awards, and was honoured with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2022.
Stewart started as a stand-up comedian before branching into television as host of Short Attention Span Theater for Comedy Central. He went on to host You Wrote It, You Watch It (1992-1993) and The Jon Stewart Show (1993-1995) on MTV, and appeared in films including Big Daddy (1999) and Death to Smoochy (2002). After leaving The Daily Show, Stewart used his celebrity in sustained advocacy for 9/11 first responders and war veterans' health benefits, helping pass the permanent authorization of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act and the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022. He hosted the 78th and 80th Academy Awards and co-authored the best-selling satirical books America (The Book) in 2004 and Earth (The Book) in 2010.
Born at Doctors Hospital in Manhattan, Stewart grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, in an Ashkenazi Jewish family. His parents divorced when he was eleven, and he later dropped his surname, having it legally changed to "Stewart" in 2001.
