At age 18 he moved to the United States to attend Grinnell College in Iowa, where he double-majored in computer science and philosophy, and he later became a naturalized United States citizen. After graduating, Nanjiani moved to Chicago, where he began performing stand-up comedy at open-mic nights before continuing to build his act in New York.
