About Annette Leslie Jones
Leslie Jones (born September 7, 1967), born Annette Leslie Jones, is an American stand-up comedian and actress. She was a cast member and writer for the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2019, and hosted the ABC game show Supermarket Sweep. She has been a featured performer at the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal and the Aspen Comedy Festival, and in 2010 her one-hour comedy special, Problem Child, was broadcast on Showtime. Jones starred in Ghostbusters (2016) as Patty Tolan, and in 2017 and 2018 was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on SNL.
Jones was born in Memphis, Tennessee; her father, Willie Jones Jr., was in the United States Army, and the family relocated frequently before settling in Los Angeles. She attended Chapman University on a basketball scholarship and later followed her coach to Colorado State University, where she settled on a communications major but left without a degree. She began doing stand-up comedy in college in 1987 after a friend signed her up for a "Funniest Person on Campus" contest, which she won.
Encouraged by comedians Mother Love and Dave Chappelle, Jones moved to New York City to hone her craft, appearing on BET's ComicView. After years performing in smaller clubs, she secured prime-time slots at The Comedy Store around 2010. In 2013, Chris Rock helped her secure an audition for Saturday Night Live, where she was first hired as a writer before being promoted to the cast in October 2014. At age 47, she became the oldest person to join the show as a cast member. The 44th season was her last on SNL.
