About Mel Brooks
Mel Brooks, born Melvin James Brooks, originally Kaminsky, on June 28, 1926, is an American actor, comedian, film director, songwriter, and playwright whose career has spanned nine decades. He is one of the few people to have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, and has also received a Kennedy Center Honor, a Hollywood Walk of Fame star, the AFI Life Achievement Award, a British Film Institute Fellowship, a National Medal of Arts, and a BAFTA Fellowship.
He began his career writing for Sid Caesar's Your Show of Shows alongside Mel Tolkin, Neil Simon, and Carl Reiner. With Reiner he created the sketch The 2000 Year Old Man, which won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album, and with Buck Henry he created the spy spoof Get Smart.
Brooks won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for The Producers in 1967. He followed The Twelve Chairs in 1970 with a run of successful comedies, including Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein in 1974, Silent Movie, High Anxiety, History of the World, Part I, and Spaceballs. His musical adaptation of The Producers ran on Broadway from 2001 to 2007, winning 12 Tony Awards, and was later made into a film.
Through his production company Brooksfilms he produced The Elephant Man, The Fly, and 84 Charing Cross Road, and he starred alongside Anne Bancroft, his wife from 1964 until her death in 2005, in To Be or Not To Be. Their son Max Brooks is an actor and author, and Brooks published a memoir, All About Me!, in 2021.
