About Michael Winslow
Michael Winslow turned a childhood habit into a profession. Born in Spokane in 1958 and raised at Fairchild Air Force Base nearby, he spent his early years copying engines, animals and any other noise he could catch. After school and college he took that repertoire to nightclubs and theatres, and from there to Hollywood.
Television first saw him on The Gong Show, where his sound-alikes ran from Benji the dog to Star Trek and Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze. Opening for Count Basie led to his casting in Police Academy, and he played Larvell Jones in the first film in 1984 and through its sequels. In Spaceballs he supplied every sound effect in one scene with nothing but his voice, and he also did voice work for Gremlins.
Billed as the Man of 10,000 Sound Effects, he has taken the act to stand-up stages around the world, mixing beatboxing with character and physical comedy. He hosted Way Back Wednesday with Winslow on WGN America, and in 2021 he made the semifinals of the sixteenth season of America's Got Talent.
