Nellie McKay
About Nellie McKay
Nellie McKay did stand-up in Manhattan clubs early on, and although music became her main work, the jokes stayed in the songs. Her sets at New York music venues such as the Sidewalk Cafe and Joe's Pub drew record labels, and her debut album Get Away from Me was recorded with Geoff Emerick producing. Satire is a regular tool for her: Mother of Pearl, for instance, is a satirical song about feminist issues.
Later records include Pretty Little Head, Obligatory Villagers, Home Sweet Mobile Home and Normal as Blueberry Pie, a tribute to Doris Day. The theatre gave her a second stage. She played Polly Peachum in the Roundabout Theatre Company's The Threepenny Opera, which brought her a Theatre World Award for Outstanding Debut Performance, appeared Off-Broadway in the revue Old Hats, and built the musical show I Want to Live! around the story of Barbara Graham.
