Godoy (humorista)

Stand-up comedian from Uruguay 🇺🇾

About Godoy (humorista)

Wellington Ángel Romero Godoy, known to audiences simply as Godoy, was born in Uruguay in 1942 and has been settled in Spain since 1964. He trained at the school of dramatic art founded in his home country by Margarita Xirgu.

He left for Spain in 1968 and found work in the theatres of Madrid and on television. Meeting Quique Camoiras in 1974 pointed him towards the kind of comedy he has practised since. He then moved to Barcelona and began performing alone, in Castilian Spanish.

His material avoids stock subjects and rests on his handling of language: puns, double meanings and absurdity, with literary references that stay light. The title of his most recent show nods to Beckett. Couples and their arrangements are his most frequent target. He is a close friend of Andreu Buenafuente, who wrote the preface to his book of monologues Un tranvía llamado Godoy.

As actor and director he has staged Humor in situ (1989), Con el culo al aire (1992), Humor y tango (1995), Desde España con humor (1996) and El humor es cosa de uno (1998), followed by El Diván de Godoy and Esperando a... Godoy. On 10 December 2009 he opened Verás que todo es mentira at the Club Capitol in Barcelona, directed by Andreu Buenafuente with the text edited by Berto Romero.
