Stand-up comedians from Belarus

For the Belarusian comics who became known beyond the country, the way into stand-up started in a university comedy league in Minsk and continued in a Moscow television studio. Slava Komissarenko enrolled at the Belarusian State Economic University in 2003, formed the duo Sovest there with Dmitry Nevzorov and took it to Moscow in 2008, where the pair came second in the contest Smekh bez pravil. Working solo, he became a regular on Stand Up, the TNT series. Ivan Usovich, born in Myadel in the Minsk region, went through the same university and the student KVN league that Komissarenko edited, and moved to Moscow in 2013 after being expelled in his third year.
Idrak Mirzalizade came by a neighbouring road. Born in Azerbaijan into a family of Talysh origin and brought to Minsk at the age of two, he studied international journalism at the Belarusian State University, played KVN, started doing stand-up in Minsk and joined the TNT project in 2014. In 2017 Maxim ranked him second and Usovich fifth among stand-up comedians in Russia. That list shows where the careers were made: a Belarusian comic of this generation became known on a Russian channel, and the solo specials Usovich released in December 2020 and December 2023, Eshchyo odin den and 40 let maksimum, carry Russian titles.
Since 2020 the route no longer runs in both directions. Komissarenko criticised Alexander Lukashenko during the protests, was barred from performing in Belarus by January 2021 and left Russia in January 2022, saying he feared being abducted by Belarusian security services. He has lived in Kyiv, Warsaw, Istanbul and Prague and performs in European Union countries; in December 2024 a Belarusian court sentenced him in absentia to six years, and Russia took away his citizenship in 2025. Mirzalizade, a Belarusian citizen, served ten days of administrative arrest in Russia in 2021 over a routine about renting flats that mocked xenophobia, and was declared unwelcome in the country for life, a ban later cut to 14 years. Three comics who started in student comedy in Minsk have ended up working under three different sets of rules.
