Comedy in Germany had an establishment before stand-up turned up, and it was a theatre form. Kabarett is written, political and argued out on stage, closer to a satirical essay than to a club set, and it keeps its own houses with resident ensembles. The Kom(m)ödchen opened in Düsseldorf in 1947, the Münchner Lach- und Schießgesellschaft in 1956, and Die Distel in East Berlin in 1953, so satire had a permanent stage on both sides of the divided country.
The other older tradition belongs to carnival. A Büttenrede is delivered from a barrel-shaped lectern, usually rhymed and usually in the local dialect, and the carnival sessions from Mainz and from Franken go out on public television during Fastnacht. A speaker there works a seated hall in costume, to a metre and a set of customs that no microphone stand imposes.
Stand-up came into that crowded field in 1992, when Thomas Hermanns started the Quatsch Comedy Club in the canteen of a Hamburg theatre and later turned it into a television format. NightWash has run since 2000 out of a launderette in Cologne, giving newcomers seven to ten minutes in front of a room. German stand-up therefore grew up in broadcast slots as much as in rooms of its own.
Dialect stayed a genre rather than a flavour. Bavarian and Franconian Kabarett, Rhineland and Ruhrgebiet humour, Berliner Schnauze and the Mannheim slang of Bülent Ceylan are separate accents with separate audiences. Tedros Teclebrhan builds characters out of immigrant and small-town speech, Christian Ehring does political satire on television, Ralf Schmitz runs on improvisation and physical comedy, and Freshtorge and Phil Laude reach people through sketch and web video rather than through clubs. Chris Tall and Maria Clara Groppler do the club work. Almost all of it happens in German, with Turkish, English, Dutch, French and Hebrew turning up in individual acts.
