About Markus Henrik
Dr. Pop is the stage name of Markus Henrik, a German music-comedy artist, stand-up comedian, moderator and author born on July 1, 1982 in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia. He is one of the few performers in the German-speaking world to combine doctoral-level musicology with a fully developed stand-up persona, building entire shows around explaining why hit songs work, what makes choruses memorable, and how the global pop industry actually functions. His blend of academic credibility, keyboard demos and dry comic timing has made him a recurring face on German public-broadcaster comedy and music formats.
Markus Henrik began his media career in the mid-2000s as a radio columnist under his own name on 1 Live (WDR) and N-Joy (NDR) within the comedy strand 'Generation Protest', later moving to the Dr. Pop format on WDR 2, hr1 and SWR3. His weekly radio column 'Dr. Pops Tonstudio' on radioeins (RBB) was nominated for the German Radio Prize in the Best Comedy category by the Grimme Institute jury in 2019, and in 2020 he hosted the music explainer show 'Dr. Pops Sprechstunde' on RBB Television. He studied Popular Music and Media at the University of Paderborn and the Hochschule fuer Musik Detmold, completed an exchange semester at the University of Salford in Manchester, finished a master's in Popular Music Studies at the University of Liverpool and earned his doctorate at Humboldt University Berlin under Peter Wicke with a thesis on 'Orientalism in Popular Music'. As a touring stand-up he performs the constantly updated solo program 'Hitverdaechtig - Die Musik-Comedy-Stand-up-Show', and has appeared on ZDF's 'Comedy for Future', BR's 'Asyl fuer alle', MDR's 'Olafs Klub', ARD's 'Drei. Zwo. Eins Michl Mueller', WDR's 'Prix Pantheon', the 3sat Festival and the ZDF news magazine 'Hallo Deutschland', for which he analyzed the song 'Last Christmas' for its 40th anniversary. He is also a published author with four books on pop culture and music history, including 'Orientalismus in der Popmusik' (2013) and 'Dr. Pops musikalische Sprechstunde' (2021).
Dr. Pop is touring across Germany throughout 2026 and 2027 with his solo music-comedy stand-up program 'Hitverdaechtig', covering mid-sized cabaret theaters, club venues and 3sat-Festival-style cultural events. Tickets are sold via Reservix, AD Ticket and local box offices. Selected clips from his TV and radio work are archived on the ARD and RBB media libraries and on his official website dr-pop.de.
