About Mathias Tretter
Mathias Tretter is a German political cabaret artist (Kabarettist) and author born on May 19, 1972, in Wuerzburg. He is regarded as one of the leading voices in contemporary German political satire, with a particular affinity for language, wordplay, and intellectual social commentary. After his high school graduation he studied English and German language and literature in Wuerzburg, Edinburgh, and Heidelberg. During his civil service in the nursing brigade of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (15 months) he wrote his first cabaret texts, beginning a career that has spanned more than two decades on the German Kabarett circuit.
Tretter's first stage appearances took place at the Wuerzburg Comedy Lounge in the Theater Chambinzky during his university years. He worked part-time as a lecturer at the interpreting school in Wuerzburg, was co-editor of the literary magazine ~FISCH, worked as a freelance literary critic, and organized poetry slams and radio drama evenings at the Wuerzburg pub 'standard'. From 2004 to 2014 he was part of the trio 'Erste Deutsche Zwangsensemble' (EDZ) together with Claus von Wagner and Philipp Weber, which performed political cabaret programs across the German-speaking countries. As an ensemble they won the Salzburger Stier for Germany in 2007 and the Deutscher Kleinkunstpreis in the 'Kabarett' category in 2010 - two of the most prestigious awards in German-language Kabarett. He has also been awarded the Munich Kabarett-Kaktus. His solo programs include 'NachgeTRETTERt - the satirical year in review', which he performs every December and January in place of his current main program. His repertoire focuses on political and social themes including populism, language critique, media culture, and the absurdities of contemporary German politics. He has also worked as an author and contributor in literary and journalistic contexts.
Mathias Tretter actively tours Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with his current program and the annual 'NachgeTRETTERt' year-in-review show. Tickets and tour dates are available via his official website mathiastretter.de and ticketing platforms such as adticket.de. He occasionally appears in TV cabaret formats on ARD, ZDF, and 3sat (including 'Die Anstalt' contributions through his former trio partner Claus von Wagner).
