About Serdar Somuncu

Serdar Somuncu reached cabaret by way of the concert hall and the theatre. He studied percussion at the Conservatorium Maastricht and at the music academy in Wuppertal, then acting and directing in Frankfurt am Main, and for many years he led the Kammerensemble Neuss, a company staging plays for children and adults.

The breakthrough came with a scenic reading of Hitler's Mein Kampf, presented as Nachlass eines Massenmörders, which toured for several years after 1996. He later added a reading of Joseph Goebbels' Sportpalast speech, and because neo-Nazi groups tried to disrupt the evenings, many of them took place under police protection. The cabaret programmes that followed, among them Hitler Kebab, Der Hassprediger liest Bild and Hardcore live, were built around the figure of the Hassprediger, the hate preacher. He ended his stage career as a cabaret performer in December 2023.

Television and audio gave him a second front. He was an occasional commentator on the ZDF satire programme heute-show, hosted So! Muncu! on n-tv, a format presented as the deconstruction of a talk show, and on Radio Eins he ran Die Blaue Stunde, a two-hour Sunday interview programme. With Florian Schroeder he made the weekly podcast Schroeder & Somuncu. His books include Der Antitürke and Hasstament, he has released hip-hop records, and as a director he staged Pussy Terror for Carolin Kebekus.
