Mimicry is the whole of Shyam Rangeela's act, and it is an old and demanding branch of Indian comedy: the voice has to be exactly right before a single line of material can land. His impressions of Indian political figures, Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi among them, are what audiences know him for.
He grew up in a village in the Hanumangarh area and trained in animation in Jaipur before comedy became the work. A set he taped for the television show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, which drew a standing ovation from the judge on the panel, was never broadcast, and he has said plainly that television turned him down because his comedy was too political. That pushed his audience online, and online is where his performances mostly live.
