About Vir Das

Vir Das (born 31 May 1979 in Dehradun) is an Indian comedian, actor and musician. After beginning a career in stand-up comedy, he moved into Hindi cinema, starring in supporting roles in films such as Badmaash Company (2010), Delhi Belly (2011), and Go Goa Gone (2013). According to Wikipedia he has appeared in approximately 35 plays, over 100 stand-up comedy shows, 18 films, eight TV shows and six comedy specials, and has written comedic columns for publications including Femina, Maxim and Tehelka. He won the 2023 International Emmy Award for Best Comedy Series for the Netflix special Vir Das: Landing.

Das was raised in Nigeria and India, attending the Indian Language School in Lagos and The Lawrence School, Sanawar. He obtained a bachelor's degree in Economics and Theatre from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and was later accepted to Harvard University and Moscow Arts Theatre for their joint Stanislavsky Program. He began his career with a gig titled "Walking on Broken Das" at a hotel in New Delhi, and worked on stand-up shows such as Battle of Da Sexes and History of India: VIRitten with Ashvin Gidwani Productions.

On 25 April 2017, his Netflix special Abroad Understanding made him the first Indian comedian with a comedy special on the platform, followed by Losing It (2018) and Vir Das: Outside In (2020). In November 2021 he performed a monologue titled "Two Indias" at the Kennedy Center in Washington, which received a standing ovation but led to seven police complaints in India. He hosted the 52nd International Emmy Awards in 2024, and his directorial debut Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, produced by Aamir Khan Productions, was released on 16 January 2026.
