About Santiago Segura

Santiago Segura Silva, born on 17 July 1965, is a Spanish filmmaker and actor who has also worked as a television presenter, voice actor, and comic book writer, and who collects original comic books. He began shooting films on a Super-8 camera at the age of 12 and, on the advice of Fernando Trueba, moved to 35 mm films funded by his earnings from television game shows.

He first gained wide notice for playing a metalhead in the 1995 film The Day of the Beast, billed as a satanic comedy, a role that won him the Goya Award for Best New Actor. His directing debut came in 1998 with the dark action comedy Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law, a box-office hit in which he starred as the racist, homophobic, xenophobic, and fascist former police officer José Luis Torrente, and which won him the Goya Award for Best New Director.

Four sequels followed: Torrente 2: Mission in Marbella in 2001, Torrente 3: el protector in 2005, Torrente 4: Lethal Crisis in 2011, and Torrente 5: Operación Eurovegas in 2014, with Torrente for President added in 2026, making the series the highest-grossing run of Spanish films. Segura later turned to lighter fare, directing the children's comedies Father There Is Only One, which spawned four sequels of its own, and The Kids Are Alright, which had one sequel.
