About Hazel Brugger

Hazel Brugger (born Allison Hazel Brugger; 9 December 1993) is a Swiss slam poet, comedian, cabaret artist, and television presenter. She was born in San Diego, California, the daughter of Swiss neuropsychologist Peter Brugger and an English teacher from Cologne, Germany. She grew up in Dielsdorf, near Zurich, and began studying philosophy and literature at the University of Zurich before quitting. At the age of 17, she started her poetry slam career in Winterthur, Switzerland.

From 2014 to 2017, Brugger wrote a fortnightly column for the Swiss daily Das Magazin, and in 2015 she hosted the live talk show "Hazel Brugger Show and Tell" in Zurich. In November 2015 she started her first cabaret programme, "Hazel Brugger passiert," and in February 2019 she began touring Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with her second solo programme "Tropical," which debuted on Netflix on 2 December 2020. Since 2016 she has been a correspondent on the German political satire show heute-show on ZDF, and in 2017 she became the youngest person ever to win the Salzburger Stier cabaret prize.

In 2019, Brugger started a YouTube series with her husband Thomas Spitzer, called Deutschland Was Geht, which later became What's up, Europe? In 2025, she co-hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel alongside Sandra Studer and performed the musical number "Made in Switzerland." Her honours include the Deutscher Kleinkunstpreis, the Deutscher Comedypreis, and a Bambi Award in Comedy. She and Spitzer have been married since 2020 and have two daughters, and she has lived in Cologne since 2016.
