Born in Weymouth, Dorset, Carr spent most of his childhood in Northampton as the elder son of Christine and Graham Carr, a former Northampton Town manager and Newcastle United chief scout. He graduated from Middlesex University with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Drama and Theatre Studies, then moved to Manchester and worked in a call centre for five years while performing on the comedy circuit.
