Jack Dee
About Jack Dee
Jack Dee (born 24 September 1961), full name James Andrew Innes Dee, is an English stand-up comedian, actor, presenter, and writer known for his sarcasm, irony, and deadpan humour. He wrote and starred in the sitcom Lead Balloon and hosts the panel show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. He won Celebrity Big Brother 1 in 2001.
Dee was born in the Municipal Borough of Bromley, Kent, and grew up in Petts Wood before moving with his family to Winchester. He was educated at both private and state schools, including The Pilgrims' School and Peter Symonds' College, and entered the catering industry as a waiter before turning to comedy. His first public act was an open-mic gig in 1988 at The Comedy Store. After he won the British Comedy Award for Best Stage Newcomer in 1991, he was offered his own show, The Jack Dee Show, which first aired on Channel 4 in February 1992, and he writes all his own material.
His combination of stand-up and television continued with Jack Dee's Saturday Night, Jack Dee's Happy Hour (1997), and Jack Dee Live at the Apollo (2004), which was nominated for a BAFTA in 2006. His sitcom Lead Balloon, which he also co-wrote and in which he played the semi-biographical role of Rick Spleen, has been described as "Britain's answer to Curb Your Enthusiasm". In 2009, he was announced as one of a trio of hosts, alongside Stephen Fry and Rob Brydon, to replace the late Humphrey Lyttelton on I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, later becoming the permanent host.
