About Jonathan Huw Sweet

Jonny Sweet, born Jonathan Huw Sweet in 1985, is a British comedian and the recipient of the 2009 Edinburgh Comedy Award for best newcomer. He was born in Nottingham and educated at the local independent school Nottingham High School, then read English at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he met his writing partner Joe Thomas and was a member of the Footlights, serving as vice-president to Simon Bird. He graduated with a first and, though expected to follow his father into the legal profession, joined Endemol UK on an internship instead. He is a supporter of Nottingham Forest Football Club.

In 2009 Sweet won the Edinburgh Comedy Award for best newcomer for his show Mostly About Arthur, and he starred in Tom Basden's debut play Party, which won a Fringe First before travelling to the Sydney Arts Festival and appearing in London's West End. He became known for playing posh characters after his role as future Prime Minister David Cameron in the 2009 More4 satirical show When Boris Met Dave. With Inbetweeners stars Simon Bird and Joe Thomas, he forms the sketch group The House of Windsor, and the trio created the period sitcom Chickens, about three conscientious objectors during World War I, which was broadcast on Sky One.

Sweet recorded two series of his Radio 4 sitcom Hard to Tell, a romance starring Charlotte Ritchie as his love interest, and in 2013 was nominated for Best Breakthrough Artist at the British Comedy Awards. In 2014 he starred as Tom Oliver in the Channel 4 series Babylon, and in 2015 he created, wrote, and starred in the BBC sitcom Together, based loosely on Hard to Tell. He later starred in the Channel 4 sitcom Loaded (2017), and his debut novel, The Kellerby Code, was published by Faber in March 2024.
