About Bill Hicks

William Melvin Hicks (December 16, 1961 - February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian and satirist whose material, encompassing religion, politics, and philosophy, was controversial and often steeped in dark comedy. Born in Valdosta, Georgia, and raised in Houston, Texas, he was drawn to comedy at an early age, emulating Woody Allen and Richard Pryor, and began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston at the age of 16, becoming associated with the Texas Outlaw Comics group. He toured the United States extensively and made high-profile television appearances during the 1980s, while amassing a significant fan base in the United Kingdom and filling large venues during his 1991 tour. He released albums including Dangerous and Relentless, and the progressive metal band Tool dedicated their 1996 album Aenima to him. In 1993 his entire stand-up routine was famously cut from the broadcast of Late Show with David Letterman. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer in 1994 at age 32, and his work gained substantial posthumous acclaim, with Rolling Stone ranking him among the best stand-up comics of all time.
