About Cristela Alonzo

Cristela Alonzo (born January 6, 1979) is an American stand-up comedian, actress, writer and producer, who created and starred in the ABC sitcom Cristela. This made Alonzo the first Mexican American woman to create, produce, write and star in her own American primetime comedy. She was born in Hidalgo, Texas, and raised in San Juan, Texas, the youngest of four children of parents who were both from Mexico.

For the first eight years of her life, Alonzo's family squatted in an abandoned diner and were homeless and destitute, even with her mother working double shifts as a waitress. She learned English from watching TV, translating American shows into Spanish and acting them out for her mother. After graduating from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School, she left home to study theater at Webster University in St. Louis but dropped out because she could no longer afford school. She began doing stand-up in 2003, a year after her mother died, while working as an office manager at the Addison Improv, and later moved to Los Angeles.

In 2006 Alonzo got her first break writing on Carlos Mencia's Comedy Central show Mind of Mencia, spending two years touring on a bus with Mencia and other comics. She was a semi-finalist on Last Comic Standing in 2010 and did a 30-minute segment of Comedy Central's The Half Hour in 2013. With producer Becky Clements she created the semi-autobiographical comedy Cristela for ABC, which was picked up to series for the 2014-15 season; it concluded on May 7, 2015. In 2017 she voiced a character in Cars 3, one of her notable works.
