About Jimmy O. Yang

Jimmy O. Yang (born June 11, 1987) is a Hong Kong-American stand-up comedian and actor. His parents were both from Shanghai and later moved to Hong Kong, where he was born. In 2000, when Yang was 13, his family immigrated to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, California. He attended Beverly Hills High School and graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a degree in economics in 2009, where the commencement speaker was his future Silicon Valley showrunner and fellow alumnus Mike Judge.

Yang did his first stand-up set at 21 as "Lowball Jim" at the Ha Ha Comedy Club in North Hollywood. After turning down a return offer from the financial firm Smith Barney, he sold used cars, DJed at a strip club and seated customers at a comedy club to support himself while doing stand-up. He made his television debut on the CBS series 2 Broke Girls in 2012 and his first late-night stand-up appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show in 2014. He is best known for starring as Jian-Yang in the HBO comedy series Silicon Valley, which ran from 2014 to 2019, as well as Dr. Chan Kaifang in the Netflix series Space Force, Bernard Tai in the film Crazy Rich Asians (2018) and Josh Lin in the Netflix film Love Hard (2021).

His other credits include the action drama Patriots Day (2016), Like a Boss and Fantasy Island (both 2020), and voicing the Monkey King in Netflix's animated film The Monkey King (2023). He played the lead role of Willis Wu in the Hulu series Interior Chinatown in 2024. His comedy specials Good Deal (2020) and Guess How Much? (2023) were released on Amazon Prime Video. Yang is also the author of How to American: An Immigrant's Guide to Disappointing Your Parents, for which Mike Judge wrote the foreword.
