About Howie Mandel
Howie Mandel (born November 29, 1955), born Howard Michael Mandel, is a Canadian comedian, television personality, actor, and producer. He is known for voicing Gizmo in the 1984 film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, for playing emergency room resident Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the NBC medical drama St. Elsewhere, and for creating and starring in the Fox children's cartoon Bobby's World.
Mandel was born in Toronto and grew up in the Bathurst Manor neighbourhood of the city. He attended William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute, where he was expelled for impersonating a school official, and later worked as a carpet salesman before performing stand-up at Yuk Yuk's in Toronto. On a trip to Los Angeles he performed at The Comedy Store, which led to his being hired as a regular performer, and he was booked to open for David Letterman in the summer of 1979. He came to national attention in the United States during a six-year run on St. Elsewhere starting in 1982, and from 1990 to 1998 created and executive produced the Emmy-nominated children's animated series Bobby's World on Fox, voicing the title character and his father.
Mandel has been a judge on NBC's America's Got Talent since 2010 and on Citytv's Canada's Got Talent since 2022, and hosted the game show Deal or No Deal on NBC and later CNBC. His film roles include A Fine Mess (1986) alongside Ted Danson and Little Monsters (1989). He has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a place on Canada's Walk of Fame.
