About Aurel Mertz
Aurel Mertz (born 1 June 1989 in Stuttgart) is a German comedian and presenter. Mertz grew up in Stuttgart as the son of a graphic designer and an artist; his parents met there at the Merz Akademie. His paternal grandfather comes from Ghana. From 2009 to 2012 Mertz studied journalism and communication science in Vienna and Istanbul.
In 2013 he was discovered by Frank Elstner and supported in the Frank-Elstner-Masterclass presenter school initiated by the Axel-Springer-Akademie. During his training there he developed the late-night show Boomarama, which was first seen on the web channel zuio.tv and between 2015 and 2017 on Tele 5. Since 2017 Mertz has performed as a stand-up comedian, including at NightWash live in the Waschsalon in Cologne. In March 2020 he went on tour for the first time with his own comedy program Millennials, followed in 2023 by another tour under the program name Flawless.
From August 2019 to 2023 he was part of the Instagram sitcom Aurel on a channel created especially for it. Since mid-2023 he has hosted deep und deutlich as the successor to Louisa Dellert, and since 2024 he hosts his late-night show Neo Tropic Tonight on ZDFneo. In July 2020 he published a satirical video about police violence in the context of the Black Lives Matter movement on his Instagram channel, which several politicians criticized after reporting by the tabloid Bild. In 2025 Aurel Mertz received one of the three main prizes of the Kleinkunstpreis Baden-Württemberg. He lives in Berlin.
