About Gayle Tufts

Gayle Tufts, born on 17 June 1960 in Brockton, Massachusetts, is an American-born entertainer who has lived in Berlin since 1991 and built her career as one of Germany's best-known comedy and cabaret performers. She studied at New York University's Experimental Theatre Wing from 1978 to 1982, where she worked with director Anne Bogart, choreographer David Gordon, and composer Philip Glass. She first visited Berlin in 1984 and returned in 1986 as a backup singer for Max Goldt and Foyer des Arts. From 1988 to 1994 she worked at Tanzfabrik Berlin as a performer, director, and teacher. Tufts is widely credited as the Grande Dame of Denglisch comedy, a stage language that fluidly mixes English and German for comic effect. Stern Magazin has called her Germany's best-known American.

Gayle Tufts writes and produces shows that combine stand-up, music, and storytelling in her signature Denglisch style. From 1991 to 1998 she collaborated with pianist and composer Rainer Bielfeldt, with whom she produced six stage shows, released four CDs, and composed stage music for the Komische Oper Berlin and the Rotterdam Dans Group. In 1998 she became the first woman to perform at the legendary Quatsch Comedy Club and received the Critics' Prize of the Berliner Zeitung. Her debut book Absolutely unterwegs - eine Amerikanerin in Berlin was published the same year by Ullstein Verlag. Her second book Miss Amerika followed in 2006 at the Leipzig Book Fair, collecting autobiographical short stories, and her third book Weihnacht at Tiffany's appeared in 2007, exploring the differences between German and American Christmas traditions. In 2018 she received the German-American Media Prize from the Steuben-Schurz Society. She is a regular guest at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and the Komoedie Berlin, and her shows include the long-running format EuropaAbend. Tufts works simultaneously as entertainer, author, singer, and commentator on German and American culture.

Gayle Tufts is on tour in 2025 and 2026 with her program PLEASE DON'T STOP THE MUSIC, with performances at Konzerthaus Berlin on 7 December 2025 and dates throughout 2026 in May, September, October, November, and December.
