Bueno de Mesquita

Stand-up comedian from Netherlands ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

About Bueno de Mesquita

Abraham Bueno de Mesquita, called Appie, was born in Amsterdam on 23 July 1918 and became a Dutch comedian, actor and stage performer whose face did much of the work in his act.

During the Second World War he was held in the Dossin Barracks at Mechelen in Belgium because he was Sephardi Jewish, and was listed for deportation to Auschwitz. The camp commander wanted musicians. Bueno de Mesquita could play a cello with one string, and that, with his gift for mimicry, kept him alive.

He was on television as early as 1952, which put him among the first performers of the medium. In the 1960s he made shows with Rita Corita for television and the stage, and he worked often with the Dutch comic act The Mounties. From 1968 he spent 13 seasons alongside Rudi Carrell on German television, where viewers who could not manage his surname called him the small one with the moustache. He said that making Germans laugh felt at times like a modest revenge.

His autobiography took its title from the instrument that saved him: Cello met รฉรฉn snaar, Cello with One String. He died in Lelystad in August 2005, aged 87, after a long illness with lung cancer and a brain tumour.
