Comedy in the Netherlands grew out of cabaret rather than out of a club circuit, and the difference still shapes the work. A Dutch cabaretier writes one evening-length show, tours it through theatres for a season or two, then drops it and starts another. Cabaret is probably the most popular genre in Dutch theatres, and the bigger names sell out long runs: Najib Amhali has played the Koninklijk Theater Carre in Amsterdam. The form leaves room for songs, character work and silence, so kleinkunst and typetjes describe as much of this comedy as stand-up does.
One night of the year concentrates the whole tradition. The oudejaarsconference is a solo show about the year that is ending, performed in December and broadcast on national television since 1969, with the custom going back to 1954. Youp van 't Hek held it for years, Herman Finkers took his turn, and Claudia de Breij was the first woman to do it, in 2016. Finkers is also the reason dialect comedy turns up here: he translates his shows into Tweants Low Saxon, the speech of the Twente region and his mother tongue.
The way in runs through festivals more than open mics. Cameretten, started in Delft in 1966 and now finishing in The Hague, is where Ronald Goedemondt took both the jury and the audience award in 2003. Television is the other door, and Arjen Lubach went through it with the weekly satirical programme Zondag met Lubach, on air from 2014 to 2021; Pieter Derks works similar topical ground. English has its own stage in Amsterdam, where Boom Chicago has done sketch and improvisation in that language since 1993. Beyond the satirists sit Jochem Myjer with physical and family comedy, Jandino Asporaat with characters and sketch, and Claudia de Breij writing songs.
