About Dick Engelbracht
Dick Engelbracht was born in Zutphen on 7 October 1920 and died in Amsterdam on 5 November 1998, at the age of 78. He worked as an impressionist, voice actor, cabaret performer and stage actor: he appeared in films and on television, was heard through the 1960s and 1970s in radio programmes built on sketches and comic scenes, acted in productions of the Amsterdam Volkstoneel and presented variety shows.
His impressions made his name. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed an impression of the football coach Rinus Michels, and he was invited to use that parody to lift the Dutch national squad before a match.
In Amsterdam he met the brothers Bas and Aad van Toor, with whom he made a radio play for TROS radio. It became the television series Bassie & Adriaan: Het Geheim van de Schatkaart, in which he played inspector De Vries and a smaller part as a market trader. For years he belonged to the cabaret company Oud Amsterdam alongside Erwin Fillee, whom he always introduced as his first cousin, the pianist Jaap Daniรซls, the cabaret performer Mary Scotty and the singer Fien Westerveld; the group toured the country from 1992 to 1998, often playing retirement and care homes. Before that he had formed the Jordaan cabaret group Jolijt with Gรฉ Frankhuizen and others.
